App Functionality
Questions - The Algebra App functionality will be rolled out in two stages, with both stages having a trial beta version that will be key to gathering data and optimizing the app. To summarize and expand upon the video above, refer to the stages outlined below:
Stage One: Free Functionality
The app will allow the user to input their own equations to be solved (or expressions requiring simplifying)
The user will be presented with several methods for solving the provided equation
Upon selecting a preferred method, the user will be provided with step-by-step work for solving the equation, with the ability for expanded explanation of all parts
The user will then be provided with additional practice - Questions - of comparable level
Premium Options
In the "Am I Right?" feature, users will be able to submit answers for review
The app will either confirm the correct answer, or
If the answer is incorrect, the app provides suggestion(s) on where the user may have gone wrong
These suggestion(s) will be based on common errors and tailored to the users input
In the "Extension Questions" feature, users will be provided with options for extension questions
The questions will be of varying levels of difficulty
users struggling can work with practice questions requiring more basic skills
users seeing success can attempt more challenging problems
Some examples of variation that will be provided by extension questions include:
integer vs rational vs irrational solutions
variation of number of steps involved in solving
for example, equations with identical solutions can be presented in different forms, where students must first perform algebraic actions like expanding and collecting like terms
Alternate form questions
for example, users will be asked to identify the number of solutions, rather than the value of the solution(s)
In the "Create Worksheet" feature, users will be able to create worksheets populated by questions generated by the app
Users will have the option of selecting the amount of questions included, as well as the types of extension questions, and whether to include an answer key, full solutions, or no answer key
Stage Two: Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Once the app has launched with Stage 1 and 2 functionality in place, shift will focus towards development (or acquirement) or OCR capability
User input will shift to written/typed questions on paper, similar to Photomath
The app will also be able to scan full documents to retrieve input equations/expressions
The use of OCR will be freely available, and not limited to premium paying users
